Life lessons from hot celebs

While celebrities are not meant to be role models – we all know their job is to entertain – sometimes there’s a lot to learn from them, from overcoming great odds to investing time and effort in charitable actions. Just think of Giuliana and Bill Rancic and their inspiring life story. Fighting cancer and trying to build up a family in the same time is no easy thing. Yet they did it! After years of failed fertility treatments, they welcomed baby Edward Duke in August 2012 and now they are ready to welcome another bundle of joy to the family!

Another great couple which I think is worth all the hype is Bradgelina. One of the sexiest women alive, Angelina Jolie is much more than a Hollywood star. She’s a dedicated wife and caring mother who decided to put herself and her family above all else. She recently went through a double mastectomy to avoid breast cancer, a move many called “brave” and “inspiring”.

“I wanted to write this to tell other women that the decision to have a mastectomy was not easy. But it is one I am very happy that I made.” writes Angelina in The New York Times. “My chances of developing breast cancer have dropped from 87 percent to under 5 percent. I can tell my children that they don’t need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer.”

Meanwhile, Brad Pitt is playing his own part in the fight for humanity. His contribution to providing affordable housing to victims of Hurricane Katrina as part of the Make it Right project is just as laudable.

Make it Right began as an effort to rebuild the Lower 9th Ward in New Orleans, an area terribly hit by the massive storm in 2005. Of the 150 homes planned for the blighted neighborhood, a number of 86 homes are already in place and have all earned LEED Platinum, the highest level of certification offered by the U.S. Green Building Council.

Taking the initiative one step further, the foundation helped build an apartment building for disabled veterans in Newark, NJ, broke ground on an ambitious community development in a blighted Kansas City, MO neighborhood and partnered with Native American tribes to build homes on the Fort Peck Reservation.

Vampire Diaries star, Ian Somerhalder, has his mind set on protecting the animals and making the world, or at least part of Louisiana where he plans to build an Animal Sanctuary, a better place. The Ian Somerhalder Foundation is focused on providing a safe haven for all the outcast animals that have been neglected, mistreated and ultimately misunderstood. In addition to the animal shelter, plans include construction of a youth education center that would be home to summits on issues such as wildlife and land conservation and clean energy. Way to go, Ian!

What celebrity do you admire and look up to most?

Officially amazing: 5 curious records

There are many extraordinary things in the world but some are simply astounding. Here are our top 5 awesome records that put the fun in “fun-tastic”.

Tallest dog living. His name is George, Giant George and he’s a Great Dane owned by David Nasser of Tucson, Arizona, USA. George was measured 1.092 m (43 in) tall on 15 February 2010 and he’s absolutely gorgeous, don’t you think?

“Gangnam Style became the most “liked” video in YouTube history in 2012 with 4,911,081 votes. “We’re pleased to present his official certificate to such a global phenomenon,” said Guinness World Records Editor-in-Chief Craig Glenday, who presented the certificate at the radio studio. “Gangnam Style is an infectious, joyous song that has brought a smile to the faces of a tenth of the world’s population, and the result is that it’s the most liked video of any kind in the history of YouTube!”

The fastest toilet record is held by “Bog Standard”, a bathroom set consisting of bathtub, sink, and laundry bin, which can travel to a speed of 68 kmh (42.25 mph). The curious motorcycle ensemble was presented on the set of Lo Show Dei Record, in Milan, Italy, on 10 March 2011.

The tallest man living is Sultan Kösen (Turkey, b.10 December 1982) who measured 8 ft 3 in on 08 February 2011. He also holds the records for widest hand span and largest feet on a living person. Though life up there is not always fun, he learnt to enjoy it and keep an optimistic outlook on his existence. One of the advantages of being that tall, he says, is being able to help his mum out with jobs such as changing a broken light bulb and hanging curtains.

Are you ready to see the largest egg from a bird living? Well, you should know it weighed 2.589 kg or 5 lb 11.36 oz and was laid by an ostrich (Struthio camelus) at a farm owned by Kerstin and Gunnar Sahlin in Borlänge, Sweden, on 17 May 2008. Now that would make one big omelette!

Valentine’s Day gift ideas for her

She’s been a fun and totally cool girlfriend. He’s been a caring and devoted partner. Why let all that talk about cheesiness cloud your judgment on the most romantic day of the year?! I agree that we shouldn’t wait until Valentine’s Day to show them how much they’re loved and appreciated, but that doesn’t mean we can’t do it on this occasion as well.

Winnie love

Here are a few funny, quirky and creative gift ideas to make your Valentine’s Day even more beautiful.

Pop the question. Rumor has it that women are hard to impress. They’ve seen and heard it all, they’ve been lured with flowers, sweets and jewelry, carriage rides under the moonlight, candlelight dinners and weekend getaways. So is there something left to make your proposal unique? Well, you might buy a star and name it after her or, if you’re a mere human like most of us, get your hands on a Marry Me lottery ticket. It looks like any other scratch-off lottery ticket you’d get at any local store but when she scratches off the card to see what she’s won she will be greeted with the question Will you marry me? on it. If she’s like any other woman I know, she’ll find it surprisingly romantic and adorable. Add a dinner for two to the equation and it will surely make a sweet memory.

Dulce de Leche receipe

Shout out your love to the four winds. To clarify each partner’s status in the relationship once and for all, get a Mr. Right and Mrs./Ms. Always Right ensemble, whether it’s a pillows set, mugs, luggage tags or t-shirts. This is a fabulous gift for couples who know the truth – and dig the humor!

Pillows set

Vintage love tastes better. The truth is women love gifts, glittery, pleasantly fragranced or practical, any kind of gift that has some positive karma attached to it. But if you’re looking for a seriously impressive and unique token of your love, go with vintage jewelry. That’s also Ivanka Trump’s idea of a perfect gift for Valentine’s, according to “I’m making it increasingly difficult for my husband to buy me things. I have a jewelry line, a clothing line, a shoe line, and a handbag line, so he has to either go the vintage route or go completely outside of the box.”

A “Modern Family” inspires – home décor from the movies

Got used to the glam and glitz of the TV shows and now your apartment seems all gloomy and plain? Well, maybe there’s a way to bring a bit of glamor to your own home.

“Modern family” was one of my favorite TV shows, not only because it was all witty and funny, but because I absolutely loved the homes’ design, especially Claire and Phil Dunphy’s. It’s got some shabby chic elements that make it look so cool, yet real. It’s a perfect blend of vintage and modern pieces that come together to create a dream house for a typical chaotic family with children.

Even if we won’t be able to find the exact same colors and models as seen on TV, film sets can be a real inspiration when looking for fresh ideas to spruce up our apartments.

Depending on your budget you can start with small accent pieces, like colorful, striped pillows, comfy throws, or beautiful deep red drapes. A high-quality rug would be a welcomed addition to any room; while they vary a lot in terms of texture and style, rugs may fulfill a series of decorating functions such as warming up space, serving as anchor pieces or simply adding color to minimalist decorating schemes. They also come in a rainbow of natural colors so whether you’ll choose an all-fiber rug, a heirloom or a hooked one, you’ll get the desired effect, be it luxurious or casual. Home Goods is a great resource for this kind of home furnishings and accessories. And Pottery Barn has some interesting pieces that will give your home a “Modern family” look.

Then you’ll want to choose a nice coffee table, a rustic yet stylish cabinet and maybe a trendy plush sofa. Crate&Barrel is a great store for finding unique home décor, ranging from kitchen ware and bedroom decor to sofas, sleepers and loveseats, linens, tapestries, carpets, and much more.

Former Playboy mansion changes hands for $5.2 million

There is almost nothing at the former Playboy Mansion in Chicago to remind of Hugh Hefner and his bunnies, yet he still sells. And he sells good. A 7,784-square-foot unit in the famous residential property at 1340 N State Parkway changed hands for an impressive $5.2 million.

Presented for sale by Katherine Chez Malkin at Baird & Warner Inc., the upscale condo was sold in a cash transaction. It occupies the entire second floor of the well-known residence and is absolutely incredible in terms of décor and interior design. And one wouldn’t expect less from such a premier piece of real estate. The whole living area shouts glamor and style; it comprises three spacious en suite bedrooms and five full baths, complemented by a gorgeous attached terrace. The master suite enjoys an amazing tree-lined view and an attached paneled study.

The entire outfit is a reminder of an elegant era, infused with a playful yet luxurious vibe which makes it aesthetically pleasing. The living room is intense; it was once a grand ballroom, 52 X 27, so you can imagine how gorgeous it looks; the room has still got its original paneling and soaring ceiling heights. There is a certain timelessness feel following you around. The dining area preserves the same classiness and sophistication as the rest of the house. There is a fully equipped kitchen, with an attached butler’s pantry and a family room. It’s truly fantastic.

The house was built in 1899 for Dr. George Swift Isham and was bought by Hefner in 1959. It housed the legendary Playboy icon until 1974, when Hefner abandoned it and moved full-time to the West Coast, taking all his “long-eared” friends with him.

Here’s a sneak peek into the former Playboy Mansion:

Two and a Half Men reaches its tenth fantastic season

CBS had another shot at revamping the show’s success by bringing Charlie back from the dead in the tenth season of the acclaimed hit-comedy Two and a Half Men. But it was not Charlie Sheen that returned to the show; it was actually Kathy Bates who guest starred as the ghost of Charlie Harper. Charlie’s ghost, played by the academy award winner actress, visited Alan in the hospital after he had suffered a minor heart attack. Other Hollywood stars will stop by the show in its tenth season, including Michael Bolton and Miley Cyrus.

Charlie Harper got killed in the premiere of season nine, giving the show quite a surprising twist. Suddenly, the series had lost its main attraction. Even more surprising perhaps was Ashton Kutcher’s joining the crew as an “an Internet billionaire with a broken heart”, more like a replacement for Charlie Sheen’s high-living character. Although Kutcher does not possess Sheen’s undeniable charm, he’s a welcome addition to the show. And no one can say that he’s a bad actor; he’s proven some amazing comedy acting skills so many times before; who can forget that dim-witted pretty boy, Michael Kelso, in That ‘70’s Show?!

The series is still focused on presenting the funny side of life, while tackling some sensitive issues like single parenting, love, men-women relationships, dating, getting back on your feet after divorce, family, money and friendship.

Although the ninth season did not boast an immense success from the very beginning, as fervent fans wanted Sheen back on the show, ratings continued to go up, definitely a good omen for the sitcom’s future.

Things are getting better for Charlie Sheen, too, as he’s moved on to a new project that premiered this summer on FX.

Anger Management features some other big names in the industry like Selma Blair, Shawnee Smith, Daniela Bobadilla, Michael Arden, and Noureen DeWulf. It broke a ratings record with 5.74 million viewers in its series debut, ranking as the most-watched sitcom premiere in cable history.
